A classic Saturday Night Live sketch from the 1990s gets resurrected for a new commercial, with two original stars returning alongside Samuel L. Jackson. Over the course of the show's 50-year run, a number of iconic sketches have come and gone, including 1998's "The Delicious Dish," which sees Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon serving as NPR hosts while Alec Baldwin's character, a baker, joins the show to discuss his famous holiday treat, "Schweddy Balls." The conversation that follows is full of sexual innuendo, with Baldwin memorably saying, "No one can resist my Schweddy balls."

In partnership with Capital One, SNL now shares a new commercial that resurrects "The Delicious Dish," with Gasteyer and Shannon both reprising their roles as NPR hosts. Baldwin doesn't return, with Jackson instead taking his place, but the ad features the same style of innuendo as the original. Gasteyer, for example, at one point asks Jackson to take out his "sweet, buttery buns." Check out the video below:
Shannon joined SNL in 1995 and left in 2001, while Gasteyer joined in 1996 and left in 2002.

What The "Delicious Dish" Commercial Means For SNL
SNL Is No Stranger To Resurrecting Sketches & Characters
The latest collaboration with Capital One speaks to SNL's impressive reach as a TV show. It's not unusual for current or former SNL cast members to appear in commercials, and figures like Kenan Thompson, Kate McKinnon, Chloe Fineman, and Pete Davidson have all appeared in commercials for everything from Autotrader to Verizon. "The Delicious Dish" commercial with Capital One, however, is something of an outlier because it's playing off of a specific sketch from the show, instead of just banking on the stars' recognizability.

Some sketches live on in the public consciousness after SNL, and it's not unusual for these sketches to eventually return. Sometimes these sketches return on the actual show in an updated form, such as "Washington's Dream" starring Nate Bargatze, while other times they take on a life beyond the show. Wayne's World, for example, started out as an SNL sketch before being turned into two films starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey.
Our Take On The Resurrected "Delicious Dish" Sketch
Why Alec Baldwin Didn't Return
Baldwin was crucial to the original "Delicious Dish" sketch, with his monotone delivery making all the innuendo even funnier. It's not surprising that he didn't return for the Capital One ad, however, given the recent Rust shooting incident. Plus, Jackson has done previous Capital One ads in the past, so he's more associated with that brand.

It is fun to see Shannon and Gasteyer back as NPR hosts, and it's clear that they haven't lost their spark even 26 years after the original sketch aired. It probably would have been funnier to see the "Delicious Dish" sketch resurrected on the actual show, as the commercial is clearly playing down the innuendo, which is why the Saturday Night Live sketch was funny in the first place.

Comedy
The longest-running sketch-comedy/satire show on television, premiering in 1975, Saturday Night Live is a weekly series that features new hosts for each episode, with a core cast of actors and comedians that rotate over time. Episodes feature several skits that are sometimes ad-libbed on the fly, with the hosts engaging in most of them, and also provide musical guest performances that cap off each night.
