The NFL Draft is around the corner. And while picking the best prospects available is on the Chicago Bears’ to-do list, so is taking care of Kyler Gordon — the first player drafted by General Manager Ryan Poles.

While speaking with reporters at the Annual League Meeting in Florida, Chicago’s GM expressed that signing cornerback Kyler Gordon was a “priority” for the team. With that being said, it is a little bit complicated.

Check out what Poles had to say about the matter:

"That'll still be a priority … Kyler is a guy we want part of this moving forward."

Here is a transcription for those who can’t watch the video above with the audio on:

“That will still be a priority. For me, in our exit meetings at the end of last season, I told all the guys in terms of future, if it was contracts, or coming back, or anything like that, the important thing is I’ve got to get with our new coaching staff and kind of see how the different players fit based on what scheme we’re going to be running. We’ve been able to have those conversations, and I know Kyler is a guy that we want to be a part of this moving forward. So the timing of that, I’m not sure how that all is going work out, but that is a priority.”

The Bears drafted Kyler Gordon in the second round (39th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. He has played 42 games (34 starts) in his first three seasons with the team, collecting five interceptions, two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, nine tackles-for-loss, four quarterback hits, and 1.5 sacks in those contests.

The 25-year-old cornerback is coming off what might be his best season as a pro. Gordon didn’t snag any picks this year, but Pro Football Focus gave the University of Washington product a 76.0 overall grade on defense. That number checked in as the 13th best among the 116 cornerbacks who played enough snaps to qualify for the leaderboard. In other words, Gordon was in good company with how he graded out from an analytics standpoint.

Getting a contract extension for Kyler Gordon is among the Bears’ offseason priorities

A Kyler Gordon extension has been on our mind throughout the offseason. Back in January, the seeds were planted after hearing new Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen talk about the rising fourth-year cornerback. Since then, there has been an expectation that Gordon would receive a second contract with the Bears before kicking off the final season of his four-year rookie contract. When you take into consideration how well Gordon performed under the old regime, the kind words shared by the new guys, and the potential that could be unlocked by playing in a new scheme, you do not have to work hard to cook up why the Bears would want to get this done.

This is what Kyler Gordon had to say about an extension possibility back in March:

“I love Chicago. I love everything about it. The people, the history, the team, community. This is where God is telling me to be, this is where I will be. It’s where I want to be. As far as an extension, we’ll see what happens. I’ve got no control over that, but God will.”

ED BLOCK COURAGE AWARD WINNER KYLER GORDON TALKS EXTENSION

It sounds like the Bears and Gordon want to run it back with a new deal. Hence, I will not spend any time worrying about a deal getting done. A Kyler Gordon extension with Chicago’s football team sounds like it’s on the horizon —even if it isn’t imminent. If nothing happens on that front by the time the team kicks off its regular season in September, then I’ll start getting worried. But we can cross that bridge when we get to it.
