JOHN SYDNEY MCINTYRE

In Loving Memory

It is with sadness and broken hearts that the family of John McIntyre announce his peaceful passing on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the age of 82 years.
John passed surrounded by the love of his wife Bev; children: Stacey, Mike, and son-in-law Michael.
John is also survived by his sister Mary Bailie, sister-in-law Barb (Mike) Tight; grandchildren: Megan (Luke) Deptuch, Joshua (Brooke) Szajewski, Alex McIntyre, Leah (Garrett) Loster; and great-grandchildren: Wyatt and Laney Szajewski, and Lincoln Deptuch.
John’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but the love he shared and the memories he created will be cherished by all who knew him.
John’s grandchildren were very important to him. We have asked each of them to include a few words here to honour that relationship.

In loving memory of Grandpa John, we are forever grateful for our time spent together but especially watching Goldeyes games and sharing conversation over drinks and dinner.

We love you.

Megan, Luke, and Lincoln

Grandpa - from early memories of sitting on your lap driving the boat out to the island, to sharing a tee box and conversations around a campfire, we will always remember the times we spent together. We will forever miss your hugs and smiles.

Love you forever.

Josh, Brooke, Wyatt, and Laney

My Grandpa was extremely loving, caring, thoughtful, friendly, funny, and intelligent. I will dearly miss golfing, watching sports, travelling, and just having a beer with him. I consider him a role model and he helped me a lot through some hard times. I love and miss you, Grandpa.

Thank you for everything!

Alex

Grandpa, I miss your serene and comforting presence, your wisdom, your warm hugs, your smell, your bright smile, and your booming laugh. I will always treasure our memories together, and I am so grateful that you were at my wedding. We hope to follow in your footsteps with our marriage and support each other forever like you did with grandma. I admire the unconditional love you had for the people you cared about and aspire to be more like you. I love you so much, grandpa.

You are dearly missed.

Leah and Garrett

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • I just learned of John’s passing and was so saddened to hear the news. Although I haven’t seen the Mcintyre “clan” in a long time, I have many fond memories of the times we spent together in the 70’s and 80’s. Besides wonderful social get togethers in Winnipeg, our numerous canoe trips and Thanksgiving (Turkey Early) celebrations are memories I hold dear. I will always consider John and Bev as important and dear friends. To Bev, Stacey and Mike I send my heartfelt condolences. - Posted by: Geraldine Krone (Friend) on: Dec 30, 2023

  • All of us at Southside Golf Course are sending our condolences and support to your family during this difficult time. We will miss his wonderful presence and friendly ways that brought joy to our golf family. We will fly our flag at half mast when we open this spring in his remembrance! - Posted by: Tracy Kibsey (Friend ) on: Dec 13, 2023

  • Bev, Mike, Stacy, our deepest condolences. What a shock. Such great memories of our times together. Grad school was made so much better having John and you, Bev, as such great friends – and I was so lucky that John recruited me to U of M. It was such a good time. And then there was the good fortune when we were able to get mezzanine seats in Chicago to see the Stanley Cup final. John was (like) a brother to me. John was always so thoughtful, kind, and generous. Ready for a good time and also ready to provide support whenever it was needed. When I came back to Winnipeg with Cindy, John was phenomenal in pulling everyone together for a dinner. It was the most wonderful reunion – as if I never left. Great feelings as I think of all our times together in Champaign, Winnipeg, and San Diego. I just spent an hour going through John’s old emails with the wonderful humor and wonders. We look forward to being part of the celebration of an incredibly good man (and brother). - Posted by: Tom and Cindy Duffy (friends) on: Dec 13, 2023

  • John was such a special person with an amazing laugh and a huge passion for life! He was always able to put everyone at ease with a joke or a hug. We are so sad for you and sorry such a wonderful person is gone. We know the shock is even greater for you. I hope memories of the happy times you had together can be of some comfort during this incredibly difficult time. We send our most heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. • Dr. John S. McIntyreJohn was an affable, good-natured friend and colleague in the Department of Psychology who managed to always make the good times better for those around him. John and I attended the same graduate school at different times, but we caught up with one another when he advocated for my recruitment to the University of Manitoba. It’s rumoured he did so after learning about my “scientific” field study of a rock festival as part of the Canadian follow-up to Woodstock (Festival Express). Less enthusiastic than John, however, my advisor strongly implored me to decline an impending interview with Rolling Stone Magazine about the study for the sake my academic career. As friends and colleagues, we shared rewarding and challenging times together as we saw the evolution of our department as a discipline over the many decades. John cared deeply about our department and passionately pursued his commitments to its development, to student training, and to administration. John’s term as Head of the psychology department was during a nascent era that saw the emergence of many academic initiatives that would bear fruit in the years to come, with programs such as clinical psychology and applied behavioural analysis. These and other initiatives flourished and formed the bedrock of the strength of our department today, as well as spawning new developments such as school psychology. Among his non-academic interests, John followed the Winnipeg Goldeyes enthusiastically, at whose games on occasion, we would catch up to laugh about our past shenanigans. John will be deeply missed by friends and colleagues alike who knew and loved him, Raymond P Perry, Department of Psychology. - Posted by: Raymond P Perry (Friend and colleague) on: Dec 09, 2023
